Welcome to Healthy Harrison County Kids!
What is Healthy Harrison County?
Healthy Harrison County is an initiative started by the United Way of Harrison County to bring together Harrison County communities, residents, businesses and agencies in a joint effort to improve the health of everyone living and working in Harrison County.
How is the Lack of Physical Activity and Poor Nutrition Affecting our Children?
Obesity levels in children have more than doubled in the last 10 years to over 15%, with over 30% of America's youth being considered overweight. Lack of exercise and unhealthy diets are likely contributors to the dramatic increase in Type II diabetes among American children.
What are Some of the Factors?
Some of the most common factors for children becoming overweight are video games, fast food or poor nutrition, computers, television, and cuts in funding for school physical education programs. More than 60% of today's children do not participate in organized physical activities outside of school.
What kind of Fitness Activities can Children Do?
When most adults think about exercising, they imagine working out in the gym on a treadmill or lifting weights. Yet for children in Harrison County exercising means playing and being physically active. Children exercise in gym classes at school, at sports practices, dance classes, and martial arts classes. They also exercise by just "being kids" at recess, riding bikes, or playing tag.
